Trick or Treat on Halloween

This article, entitled ‘Trick or Treat on Halloween’ is the next in the program of Holiday activity essays written by The Towlers. Its purpose, as with this whole series of halloween articles, is to instruct you on what to do on halloween and halloween costume matters, and to further open discussion. We hope that it is simple to grasp, and that the different holiday wisdom provided is helpful. Halloween never has been my favorite holiday. As a kid, growing up on the farm, trick-or-treating meant getting in and out of the car (often on very cold nights) and wearing coats over our costumes. I certainly liked the candy, but it never made much sense to me.

As a father, I must admit I have warmed to the holiday, but I still have a problem with all the focus on witches and ghouls and such. A holiday that focuses on scary things still bothers me just a little bit. I’ve been pleased that my children have typically chosen more wholesome images to emulate through their costumes.

There is no rule that the food should be one thing or another. In fact, a potluck of choices is the most American of all ways to celebrate. Gather up some new menu ideas and make this fourth of July fun and enjoyable for everyone.
